Joshua Charow is a New York City based documentary filmmaker and photographer. He documents artists, artisans, and unsung heroes.
As a teenager, Charow was immersed in 'Urban Exploring,' climbing skyscrapers, bridges, abandoned subway tunnels, frequently entering and photographing off-limit spaces of the city.
Charow creates a series titled Artist in Residence, which captures the lives of artists living in the most unique studios in NYC, alongside a slate of original documentary films. He releases his work on Instagram and YouTube, where he’s built a following of over 750,000 people. His films have organically reached more than 100 million views across his personal social media platforms.
Most recently, Charow directed the full interview video series for The New York Times Magazine’s 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters including interviews with Taylor Swift, Jay-Z, and Mariah Carey.
He directed Chanel’s Campaign for the 2026 Metiérs d’Art Collection. For the campaign, he made four mini-documentaries about the artisans in Paris who created the collection.
Charow directed Echoes of the Past, a short documentary that revealed Kid Cudi’s hidden life as a painter, which premiered at Miami Art Basel.
Charow has made documentaries for TIME Magazine, The New York Times, New Yorker, and had films premiere at DOC NYC, Art Basel, and The Tribeca Film Festival.
Charow has created two photography books about the last original artist lofts in NYC.
